So I slacked a bit in philosophy class this morning but only because I got completely distracted by so many fantastic metal related things that I wanted to share with you! And now I’m here to bring you your big buffet of metal which I have so graciously prepared for all of you!
First off I will share with you what prevented today form turning into a horribly stereotypical Monday. And that is this: My favoritebandofalltimeever Shadows Fall played a NEW song at a show and some totally awesome person was oh so awesome enough to record it and post it online-on Metal Injection! (A totally awesome metal website that I love to frequent.)And it’s super cool because the way it starts off is really death metal like- slow and chuggy and heavy and low and everything that makes those lovely sounds that I love in my metal! But don’t worry because about halfway through they speed things up and sound more like traditional thrashy Shad. Oh and Brian Fair’s vocals still sound the same as they have for the past two albums. (Which I personally enjoy a ton! However, I do feel that he could take it back about five years and grow and scream slightly more. Not that his singing isn’t fabulous because he does actually have a great voice.) So without further ado here is the video!
Okay so on a different note it was just released that Goatwhore will be on the Summer Slaughter Tour. Just add that name to the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless and Exhumed. Each week they drop another name that will be on the bill. Excellent. Oh and because the headliners are Cannibal Corpse everyone should listen one of their new tracks that was released originally to Revolver Magazine earlier this month. Check it out (that is if you haven’t yet. And I honestly don’t know why you wouldn’t have listened to is an embarrassing number of times already because it is that great. I know people that have…) because it is totally brutal and the production quality is ligit. I can’t count how many times already that ridiculously heavy chugging riff has gotten stuck in my head. I really can’t wait for the whole entire album, even though I have to. So give it a listen and don’t worry I went and found it on youtube because Revolver wouldn’t let me embed the damn track straight from the site.
Okay so another fun and awesome newsy thing from the dudes at Metal Injection: Brendon Small (the dude who gave us the brilliance of Metalocalypse) has give us a release date for his side project entitled Galakticon. (Sounds like a Dethklok song no?) Anyways I’m just going to post the whole official press release, which also says that the new season of Metalocalypse, Season Four, is going to be out in April! The wait is almost over!!!
BRENDON SMALL is the co-creator/ writer/ actor/ director/ producer/ of ADULT SWIM’SMETALOCALYPSE television series. Brendon Small is also responsible for writing and performing all of the show’s music and DETHKLOK: THE DETHALBUM and DETHALBUM II, the latter now known as the fastest-selling death metal album to date.
rw22332Now, Brendon has written and produced BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON: “A High Stakes Intergalactic Extreme Rock album”, his long-awaited side project set to release in April 2012. The album release will coincide with the Season 4 premiere of METALOCALYPSE.
Coming off of the second DETHKLOK album which was heavier and darker than the first,BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON searches for melody (in the vocal) and finds inspirations in modern black metal, Queen, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. No influence is unwelcome on this project. Brendon Small paired with DETHKLOK drummer (legendary metal drummer) Gene Hoglan (Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Fear Factory) and DETHKLOK bassist Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, Mike Keneally band) and DETHKLOK engineer and mixer Ulrich Wild.
“This album should be thought of as an audio comic book, an over acted chamber drama, a ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously all the way to the end,” states Brendon Small.
BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON comes as a follow up to Brendon’s work on the chart-topping DETHKLOK albums based on METALOCALYPSE and released by Williams Street Records. DETHKLOK: THE DETHALBUM debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 with over 30,000 copies sold in the first week and held the “fastest-selling death metal album to date” position originally until the follow-up, DETHALBUM II, surpassed it to break the aforementioned record with a #15 debut on the Billboard Top 200. DETHKLOK has performed on several US tours and headlined the os Angeles kick-off date of the 2011 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.
This project sounds super sick! I look forward to hearing it as well as watching some new Metalocalypse episodes. (Metalocalypse Season Premier party anyone?) Oh and there’s this awesome interview from Metal Injection that is absolutely hilarious and it’s with Nathan Explosion, Skwisgaar Skwigelf, and of course Pickles. I highly recommend you give it a listen. Check it out here.
Upon a Burning Body posted “getting close to announcing when the new record comes out” but of course they’ve been saying this forever now. But I feel hopeful because I look forward to seeing where this band is headed musically and in their career. They’ve currently been busy touring.
Chelsea Grin announced that they begin recording their new EP this week. They also tweeted that Jason Richardson is now officially their lead guitarist. Sure we knew he was going to be prior to this but now its OFFICIAL.
The Black Dahlia Murder premiered the video for the track “Moonlight Equilibrium” today at bloody-disgusting.com. The music video is funny. And it’s got silly acting, a vengeful Victorian werewolf, and lots of blood stuffs. If you like the band (or if you don’t like the band) you can check the video out here.
Once again Dave Mustaine gives us another reason to talk crap about him. Check out what recently spewed from his mouth when asked about gay marriage. “Well, since I’m not gay, the answer to that would be no.” Dave was then questioned if he would support legislation to make marriage between a man and another man legal. He replied, “I’m Christian. The answer to that would be no.” Like we really needed another reason to think he’s an asshole?
So everyone who’s been following the whole Black Sabbath reunion and new album events and whatnot are probably freaking out right now. And if you are one who is freaking out about the latest news just calm down because you are overreacting. On the official Sabbath website it was released that the summer dates were cancelled except for Download. These dates would be replaced by an Ozzy tour. (Okay, it’s not the greatest but isn’t it better than nothing? I’ll leave it up to you to decide the answer to that.) But this is all due to Tony Iommi’s cancer so stop whinnying and be supportive. They’re going to reschedule. (And you honestly shouldn’t be surprised about the cancellations.) Oh and Bill Ward is thinking about rejoining so that’s a good thing. For now just sit down and shut up and get stoked about something else.
If you dig some old school metals you might be aware that Angel Witch is about to drop their new album in a month. That would be on March 20th through Metal Blade Records. Here is a track entitled “Dead Sea Scrolls” off the album that is entiled As Above, So Below. Give it a listen and reminisce about metal back in the day.
Oh and if you dig that Finnish melodic type metal, Sonata Arctica just gave a brief update about their new album that is set to be released hopefully sometime this year. They stated that it will be a sort of follow up to their last album, The Days of Grays, but will not have the same sound. I think another update is soon in order!
Okay time for the local metal segment!
Just when you think Family Tree has given it all they got they throw another one at ya! This time it’s Chimaira in October this year! There’s going to be two shows at the usual places. On the 12th of October it’s at Koots for the 21+ crowd and on the 13th it’s at Club Millennium for the all ages. The opening bands for the all ages show are Veritas and Sicarius. The openers for the 21+ show are City in Ashes and Wichita Shadows. Tickets are 20 bucks before hand and 25 at the door. The tickets go on sale on March 16th and you can pick them up at Koots, Mammoth Music, or online at groovetickets.com. Should be quite the show!
Local favorites Decepticide are looking for a bassist. Here is their ad.

3) Be 21+ (or at least turning 21 this year)
4) Have a job (we pay rent for a practice space)
And here is what they said about their current situation “please save your questions about Eric. he’s still our brother. there’s absolutely not drama. He’ll be with us until the spot is filled in.” There ya have it!
And we have a local all ages show coming up next Friday, March 2nd at the Downstairs. And I’m stoked to go because The Lost Concept is playing and I haven’t seen them in forever it feels! I have missed them. It takes me back a bit I must confess. I’m uber stoked to see Live As Lions play another show! They were brilliant last time and I know they will play a totally kick ass set again. If you haven’t seen them yet I’m sure you’ve heard of them and honestly you need to get your ass down the the show and check them out. Don’t make up a lame excuse as to why you cannot go either! The show is 11 bucks (go shovel some snow and make 20) so there is no excuse for being broke and not affording it. It’s Friday night and you live in Anchorage, Alaska so I know you honestly do not have something more important to do. Oh and you can also consider this show training for Lamb of God! It’s like practice to help get you all sorts of prepared for what we might be in for the following Friday. (Not that you’re going to ever really be prepared for Lamb of God live but whatever.) And most importantly SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC. Every band started local at some point and these guys all work their butts off and give it their all to play their stuff. And as if you needed another excuse to go, you can come chill with me, Mtlmaiden, because I will be there moshing and headbanging and whatnot because that is what I do.
Lastly I’d like to leave you with this message from The Downstairs that they just posted on their Facebook wall.
It’s no secret that all ages shows are dying. Shows used to be packed regardless of the bands playing, just the excitement of of watching music drove people to go to shows.
To everyone that is passionate about local all ages shows LIKE THIS POST.
You’ll be invited to a special round table session where we’re going to discuss what we’re going to do. I want to hear from young people, because that is who this is going to effect. The community has not been supportive and it’s time to make ourselves heard. They might not like this at first, but they’re going to learn to deal with it. Because all of you are their future (and some present) tax paying citizens. The all ages scene movement starts NOW
This is completely true. When I first started going to local shows they were pretty full. (I am now getting older so yes this was more than just a couple of years ago.) It was a really active and open community. And what was cool was there was a gig almost every week. They kept me out of trouble and gave me a place where I could go and have fun and feel like i belonged to something significant. I know this sounds sappy and whatever but it’s true and for anyone who remember how the old scene was you know it has changed significantly. And another big difference that I see now is it’s mostly more young people showing up. This is great and all but makes me feel old. Back in the day EVERYONE showed up. I hear people complain all the time about how all the 21+ shows have the good bands now. Hell I’ve even complained of it myself. This is because there isn’t enough people at the all ages shows for these bands to really play to. If you use the excuse that “it’s too expensive” or “I don’t like the bands” you are honestly just making up excuses. 10 bucks is not that much and if you don’t like the bands show up and have an awesome educated conversation with me about why you don’t like the bands and what bands you do like. I swear I make for an awesome conversation. I can talk metal for days. Seriously, show up. You will find a way to have fun or I will assist you if needed because I will be there.
As always- Keep it metal. \m/
